She met her then-boyfriend of three years on the same show, fellow writer, director, and actor B.J. Novak. From the start, they were in similar situations, having been hired to the show as cast members and writers. In the show, Novak played the role of Ryan Howard while Kaling portrayed his Indian workmate Kelly Kapoor. The two would, later on, develop a romance in the second season of the show. It quickly transitioned into the real world, as the fellow cast members and writers would date starting in 2005. Like their characters, the two dated on and off for three years, ultimately ending their romance in 2007. Unlike their characters, they continued to be best friends still, supporting each other in their endeavors while also often collaborating.
